What is OpenShift

OpenShift is Red Hat's Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) that allows developers to quickly develop, host, and scale applications in a cloud environment. With OpenShift you have choice of offerings, including online, on premise, and open source project options.

OpenShift Origin includes support for a wide variety of language runtimes and data layers including Java EE6, Ruby, PHP, Python, Perl, MongoDB, MySQL, and PostgreSQL.

OpenShift 3 is built around a core of application containers powered by Docker, with orchestration and management provided by Kubernetes, on a foundation of Atomic and Enterprise Linux. Origin Milestone 5 (M5) is the upstream community project that brings it all together along with extensions, to accelerate application development and deployment.

Download OpenShift

The easiest way to run OpenShift Origin locally is to download an image suitable for running on a VM. The image will work on KVM , VirtualBox or VMWare.

Gartner's proprietary Vendor Financial Rating measures companies against various distinct financial ratios. Red Hat saw

  • revenue grow 17% for the trailing twelve month (TTM) period
  • the company actually saw revenue growth accelerate (to 19%) year over year
  • its TTM net profit margin of 11% also earns high praise
  • increased investment in research and development (R&D)
  • strong TTM cash flow from operations to revenue ratio, 33%,
  • however, this is negatively impacted by the large amount of deferred revenue in current liabilities

So the company enjoys double digit revenue growth and profit margins while displaying a very strong ability to generate cash and increase R&D investment.
